every video file is made up of two components...video and audio...there are different formats through which video and audio can be encoded in order to form, say, a movie.
you may not have the codec (decoder) software to play the video part...all you need to do is download the same from the internet....you can find out what codec is required by downloading a tiny utility called g-spot (http://www.headbands.com/gspot/ ). After knowing what codec is required, just google for it and download it....

Well, there is no universal format for movies. In fact, there are several formats. Different media players support some but never all the available formats. To play a particular movie, you need the proper codec, which stands for compression - decompression. The best way to understand codecs is to think of it as a plugin for a media player so it can play a certain type of video file. Make sure you are using the same media player on your laptop and home computer. If it still won't play then you need to download the right codec to play the movie. You can download codecs from http://www.filehippo.com/download_klite_codec_pack/. Install the codec and try to play the movie again.
