I hate the term partner used to describe a gay persons mate/bf/gf/lover. To me a partner is a person you play tennis with or do lab work with. It feels very strange and clinical to describe your lover as your "partner"
Am I the only one that feels this way about that term?

I couldn't agree with you more. The word is ridiculous. It takes sexuality out of a sexual relationship. It's hiding the fact that two boys or two girls enjoy eachothers' company enough that they f***k on a regular basis, just like straight couples. I don't mean to be crude, but give me a break. "Partner?" That's as bad as calling your boy/girlfriend your "associate" or "collaborator" or "affiliate" or "colleague." A straight person must have come up with this term, or perhaps a gay person with his or her head in a vise. Ya know, I can't stand the term "significant other" either. What the hell is that supposed to mean anyway.

I honestly don't like the term "lover." I mean,if a person's straight, they don't go around announcing to people this is my "lover." LOL,imagine how that'd sound at little Emily's new elementary school PTO meeting>? I just say my friend, nobody needs to know what I do in the bedroom.....

No, I definitely agree with you. If I'm dating a guy, I call him my boyfriend, not my partner. If I ended up getting married to him, or even a civil union, I would call him my husband. I would never call someone my partner.

I agree. If they are dating, then it should be boyfriend or girlfriend, and if they are married, husband or wife. I guess the husband/wife thing might be too radical for some to handle. Using the term partner singles us out. When will people realize that we equal to heterosexuals?

I don't like Partner either. It sounds like the old west or a business arraingement. I call my partner my SO (significant other).

YES

The words Husband or Wife are best for committed relationships, even in places where the govt doesn't recognize reality.

I love the term myself. It represents equality in our relationship, unlike lover, which denotes a relationship based upon sex.

THANK YOU!!! I thought no one else was with me on this word. I hate it. And here in california it seems like EVERYone uses it because its "politically correct". I hate it. I call my girlfriend MY GIRLFRIEND because thats what she is! Partner seems so...so...impersonal & almost childish.
