The majority of the population in Egypt live on the banks of the Nile, in the delta region and on the Mediterranean coast. Near to water the temperatures are not as extreme as they are in the desert. Although daytime temperatures in summer can get high, lack of cloud cover at night means that heat is lost rapidly and in the winter it can get very cold at night (I have experienced -4C in Dendara, Upper Egypt, in December)
Houses in Egypt tend to have flat roofs and when the weather is warm the family sleep on the roof. Shutters on the windows keep the sun out during the day and shops and markets stay open late so that shopping can be done in the cool of the evening.
Covering your body to protect it from the sun is essential and in the country areas the men wear the galabeya, a sort of kaftan which is much cooler than trousers and a headcovering to give protection. Women in the country areas also cover themselves completely with headscarfs, long dresses or skirts, or kaftans. The Nubian people who come from Upper Egypt (South Egypt) build their houses with domed ceilings which make the inside much cooler than you would expect.
In the cities however many Egyptians wear western dress and sometimes have airconditioning in their homes just like other countries.

Of course the Egyptian people have adapted biologically to the hot climate to an extent. Just as the Eskimos or Northern Canadians have to the cold.
Their traditional clothing, for males and females, is ideally suited to a hot dry climate.Loose fitting and made of cotton. Egypt is not the place to wear synthetics.
Cotton was only introduced on an industrial scale, to Egypt in the 18th century. Before cotton they used and made clothing made from a type of linen.
Egyptian traditional housing is made of mud-brick and also in these times of concrete and has highly set windows.
The use of glass is minimised as it draws heat in.
The alternative is the use of wooden, lattice worked shutters that cover the windows when needed..
Where possible cooking is done outside or in an area furthest away from the house. If outside it is covered with palm fronds.
If the houses are painted, they are painted in pastel tones. blues, white and palish pinks are popular around Luxor.
Some of the Nubian people build their traditional style, domed houses that allow the heat to rise and be contained.
This is a very effective way of air conditioning .
Here it gets around 10c above the average of Cairo.
This type of housing is more typical of southern Egypt, around Aswan and further, but there are quite a few in Luxor.
As no one has a pitched roof those who have the more common flat roof make use of the roof of the house as an evening patio.
Awnings are hung and attached to poles and in the summer the family may even choose to sleep "upstairs".
In the rural areas especially, you will notice that almost every home has a wooden bench outside the front door. This is another favoured spot, particularly for the essential afternoon sleep.
City living is much the same as any country that has hot summers, including New York.
People rely on their air conditioners and refrigerators for ice creams and cold drinks.Use swimming pools and dive into a nice cold shower when you need.
In city and rural Egypt it may appear to Tourists that it has become deserted between the hour of midday until dark.
Even schools adapt, with the students beginning classes earlier and finishing at midday.
Afternoons are for sleeping or doing as least as possible.
The population rise at around 5am in summer time and begin their work etc. until noon. When everything stops, shops close, the traffic dwindles, the only ones out and about are tourists and those who earn money from transporting them etc.
Then everything comes alive again with after sunset and the evening meal.
Then life begins again for the second part of the day.
It is usual to find families walking or meeting friends, and children playing in parks etc until 2am.
I always feel I am living two days in one, when I am there.
Egyptians also know that it is necessary to drink lots of water.A lesson many tourist has to find out after becoming dehydrated, rushing around on tours from one historical site to another.
The reality as an Australian who spends a lot of time in Egypt.
I find the heat here more gentle than that of Australia.
The humidity is lower and you do not so easily get sunburnt.
But you still need sunscreen.

Since they b livin there all their life, they adapt. Use Darwin's theory of survival of the fittest: only the ones whom adapt to their environment survive the others die off.
