I don't think the loss of Tavaras will matter too much to the Astros offense. Carlos Lee will be a good addition paired with Berkman. If Morgan Ensberg can recover from his injury and regain his power they have a good shot at winning the NL Central. If Ensberg can't regain his power then they will have a lot of trouble with their offense.
The reasoning is that the Cubs still have severe problems despite their hyped signings including depending on the injury prone Mark Prior as their #3 pitcher. The Cardinals still only have two reliable pitchers in their rotation. If the Cubs and Cardinals make more moves in spring training then this of course could change. If no one makes any changes, I think the Astros barring injury have as good a chance as anyone in that division.
However, beyond the division, Clemens decision will be a big factor. With Oswalt and Johnson, the three could be enough to go deep into the playoffs. Without Clemens, it would be difficult for the Astros to get past superior pitching rotations like the Dodgers, Padres and Phillies.
Regarding Loretta, he will just back up Biggio. Woody Williams is just a fourth or fifth starter and has little value.

They may finish in third place whether or not Clemens comes back. But, the season won't be all bad. Craig Biggio can get his 3,000th hit this year. He is only about 70 hits away. Jeff Bagwell's #5 may be retired whether or not it is this year. So, you have a couple of things to look forward to in you are an Astros fan.

I say good riddance to Pettitte. He seems to have lost either his confidence or his stuff or both. But I still think the rotation will be strong, anchored by Oswalt. They picked up a good bat, I think Berkman will have another great year, and overall, I think they'll do very well. Yea, it IS hard to give a prediction that isn't just fan-based, but I'm guessing they'll be in the top three of the NL near the end of the season.

They have a good shot at second if the back end of their rotation can pitch around .500 ball and they sign Clemens.
Lee was a good boost for them in the run scoring department.

At this point looking at their pitching rotation I would have to say 3rd place.
If Clemens stays which looks to be the case and one of the 3,4. or 5 pitchers in the rotation has a big season they could eek out second.
Adding Lee did help some in the run support area.

I think they are capable of 2nd if they get really good run support this year. If not they will finish no better than 3rd with the current pitching staff.

As long as phil gardner remains the manager they wont win.
This year they could be lucky and finish 80-82.
