Because the length the objective lens has to travel is so short. It's within the oil drop. The coarse adjustment could crash the lens right through the slide.

The other guy is right.

If you're using oil immersion, you're using a 60x or 100x objective. The best you will need to move it is barely with the fine tune adjustment.

Crashing the objective into the sample is called PARKING, and it's extremely bad.

a 100X objective costs over 2 grand and will end up ruining your sample.
