No not at all. I lived in Utah most of my adult life, and while I'm most definitely not LDS, I do know a lot of the history>
The majority of Mormons were immigrants from Scandinavia. Secondly after WW1, primarily immigrants came from Britain.
Not New England.
The religion (cult) started near Palmyra NY with revelations from Joseph Smith. He gathered followers (there were many "new religions" popping in the area at the time. This one was just better organized.) They then moved to Illnois, thence to Missouri Territory, and finally to "New Zion."

Actually, "pure" Puritanism, if you'll forgive an apparent tautology, was a 17th. century phenomenon. By the 19th. century, when Joseph Smith did not "come round" but actually founded and established Mormonism (making it about the most recent religion to be founded, apart from some of the more outre Californian sects) Puritanism was pretty well a spent force. As to the ancestry of the Mormons, I cannot answer. I believe they keep good records since their founding, but before that, speculation reigns. However, since they came from the Eastern U.S. in the 1830's, I would speculate that their ancestry was at least European, and probably (for religious reasons) Northern European. Further than that I cannot speculate.

The Puritans started in England in the late 1500s, early 1600s and they emigrated to America to escape religious persecution, founding Massachusetts in 1620.
The Mormons started in New York State in the mid to late 1800s. Their leader "saw an angel who gave him instruction". They traversed the US to escape religious ridiicule for their variant beliefs, such as polygamy. They ended up in Utah.
Different centuries, different groups and you are way off the mark with your theory. They certainly were mostly Caucasian of European descent but not specifically Puritan.
Why don't you go on the website of the Church of Latter-Day Saints and find out more about their real history?

suggest you get your information form the horses mouth.
http://www.mormon.org/ is the official site for Mormon's or Latter Day Saints.
type history in the search block and go to history of the church. This will give you an overview of its beginnings. (I have relatives in the church, but I'm not and don't profess to know much about it).

Well, that makes sense, considering Joseph Smith was from upstate NY and he lived there when God the Father and Jesus Christ appeared to Him in the glorious appearing.
