I would've shot V.I. Lenin, as soon as he got off the train at Finland Station. An IMMENSE amount of human suffering and civil, moral/spiritual atrophy would've been delayed, if not avoided.
A close runner-up would be, ensuring Gefreiter Adolf Htiler never suvived his experiences on the Western Front in WW1. Post WW1 German democratic government, might have had a chance to blossom, avoiding most, maybe not all, of the chances of WW2 breaking out.

I liked the Adolf Hitler change idea. Instead of becoming a dictator, I'd also persuade him to pursue his talents by continuing his art school education, as he was a very skilled artist.
A few other things I would do:
Stop O.J Simpson from savagely murdering his ex-wife and her lover, video taping Bill Clinton getting his thing worked on by Monica and broadcasting it to the world, somehow help the American militay defeat the communists back in the Vietnam War, stop the Muslim-terrorists from attacking the world trade towers, somehow prevent Michael Moore's parents from having sex and conceiving him, resuce Europe from the Black Plague that killed millions, kill the murderers responsible for the Witchita Massacre before it happened, and I don't feel like typing anymore examples because I'm feeling lazy. Maybe I'd go back in time and respond to a different question.
And I would make all of these changes because I don't think that we learned much from the original events that made us any better so theres no reason to keep them in history.

Any time you change the past, you upset the future to some degree. People would have lived longer or shorter, and some people would have never been born etc. One good thing you think you do or remove, affects so many other variables.
If I could, then I would have somehow made or change the entire world to have just one God, one belief, one system of government that believes in truth, morals, growth, education and above all peace. I think if it were that way, then all the other changes people want would be futile.

Several good answers here. My thought is how close we came to discover the attack on Pearl Harbor, and how events might have turned out had Admiral Kimmel and General Short received the decoded message that the Japanese were breaking off diplomatic relations at 8 am Hawaii time. Would they have reacted in time?

If I could change one event in history, it would be the forming of different religions and different denominations in religions. With only one there would be one hell of a lot less violence and war and hatred in the world!

I would have Adolph Hitler accepted into the art school in Vienna. He would become a famous artist. There would be no WWII or Holocaust for the Jewish people.

I would change the events that led to the emergence of Hitler and his band of thugs. The reason should be obvious.

I would try to prevent Abraham Lincoln's assassination, because I don't think he deserved to die the way he did and I think he still had a lot to give to this country in terms of helping us through Reconstruction.
