The USA became an economic and military super power as a result of our victory in World War II. While a substantial part of the world was devastated by the war, the USA was virtually untouched.

After the war, the USA became the supplier of goods and services for the many countries in the world that were damaged and not capable of supplying their own needs.

Well, at first the US was puny and really only won the Revolutionary War and the War of 1812 because Great Britain didn't care enough to put up that much of a fight, luck, and French naval help. Throughout the early and mid 1800s Europe still thought of the US as a pretty young and fairly insignificant country, but respect was beginning to grow. At the time of the Civil War, Europe's attitude began to change; the US then had a considerable army and actually some navy. I think the point at which the US really became a world power in the view of the rest of the world was when the Spanish got demolished in the Spanish-American War. Then, about WWI times when other countries' power was declining the US really became a "superpower", especially around WWII and the Cold War.
The US is now a "superpower" by another definition: a country with nuclear weapons. However, I think even before that the US was considered the most powerful nation in the world (once Britain had begun to shrink its empire and France just stopped doing anything right).

I am not telling you this because I am a reborn Christian but the following will possibly shock you. America has always been a blessed nation with rich heritage and the right economic and socio economic situations. How? The Pilgrims arrived escaping religious persecution in Europe. Very godly people. Where ever they settled they lived tough lives but made a living with their hard efforts. The coasts; Pacific, Altantic and Gulf of Mexico are rich in fisheries, and petroleum. Our seaports can be accessed from anywhere. The Mid-West is the most fertile land in the world, cattle grazing and farming are easy to do. The soil is so good grass grows without fertilization. Big names in brand names like Getty, Ford, Bell are not an accident. We are a nation that has been a Godly nation all along. People from all over the world came to America seeking the american dream. The came in the form of entrepreneuers, engineers, scientists, financiers, explorers and who knows what else. Lost of talent. In the past 100 years we have led the world in every unprecedented category unimaginable by man. We have never had a foreign nation invade us and attack us. Now we are quickly loosing the superpower effect, we have forgotten God, we have forgotten that we can do anything, we kill over 4000 unborn babies a day, family structure is falling apart, people of the same sex are getting married, crime is up, drugs, and a number of other issues. We pioneerd just about any sport, aviation, automobile, space, science, education, and who knows what else.

The US became a superpower after WW2, when the United Kingdom slowly lost ground as a world power, and they emerged as a new player in world politics.

They were joined by the Soviet Union, who grew to also be a superpower. They both had developed nuclear arsenals capable of destroying each other.

When the Soviet Union collapsed in 1992, the United States was left as the sole superpower in the world since Russia fell into poverty.

Good answers above ... you might say the US became a world power with the Spanish American War, a major player with WWI, and then a "Superpower" with then end of WWII, when the US emerged as the only undamaged developed country, briefly the only one with Atomic Weapons, and a country that clearly Europe would need to lean on for awhile (ie, Marshall Plan).

For example it was at this post-war moment that the US served as the motive force in creating the United Nations in the US.

The U.S became a superpower after ww2. It was at one time the U.S. and the U.S.S.R. (the former Soviet Union.)

After the berlin wall came down we remained the only superpower.
