Francisco Javier Eugenio de Santa Cruz y Espejo (born Luis Chuzhig) was a medical pioneer, writer and lawyer of mestizo origin in colonial Ecuador. In 1785 he was appointed by the Town Council of Quito to write a manuscript that dealt with worst problem the colony was facing, smallpox. Espejo made use of this chance and created his most complete and better written work, denouncing the way sanitation was being handled in the colony. Instead of gaining recognition, Espejo gained more enemies, and was forced to leave Quito.
