Hey Dude...
Alpha Centauri is a constellation of three stars. Proxima Centauri is the one that is closest to the Sun - about 4.3 Light Years or so.
The other two stars are rapidly circling around one another and
may even look like one star all alone to the unaided eye.
Our Sun is also a Star and in fact the closest Star to the Earth at
a distance of about 93,000,000 miles. So now you know.
It is a very long hike to Proxima Centauri. You should pack enough food and water to last a long long time.

Actually the closest star to Earth is the Sun!
I know, that's not what you meant. I just had to be a smart aleck.
Technically the star called Proxima Centauri is the closest to the Sun. Proxima Centauri is part of a star system called Alpha Centauri. Alpha Centauri is actually 3 stars, but to the naked eye they just look like one star. It's two fairly bright stars orbiting each other relatively closely, and one really dim star (that's Proxima) that orbits the other two in a very large orbit. So right now (and for a long time to come) Proxima is closer to us than the other two stars.

The closest is certainly the sun but...
Alpha Centauri is the closest star system outside our own solar system, being 4.39 light-years distant (about 25.8 trillion miles or 277,600 AU). Proxima Centauri, often regarded as part of the system, is 4.26 light-years distant.

the closest star to our earth is actually the sun at 93 million miles away (or 8.3 minutes at the speed of light). the closest star other than that is about a couple of light years away from earth.
