I used to work for Dell, and although they are good computers, they are a little too much for my budget. I wish I could get one though! :(

one of the best choices I've done in the past years, is buying my
PC from Dell, my friends and school mates have all Dell computers..it's my only Friend that I can trust with home banking, web surfing, programming, scrap booking, picture sharing, school projects and more!
Buy a Dell, you won't regret, all my friends feel the same way.

For surfing - anything - it almost all depends on your ISP

For music and pictures - look for a large SATA drive ( around 250gb)

For CD and especially DVD burning - look for lots of memory (1 gb if it runs Windows XP, 2gb if you want to run Window Vista)

For anything - get more power if you can (for potential expansion) and get bigger fans if you can (they run quieter).

Other than that, for pictures you might want to get a memory card reader that's compatible with the memory card your camera uses. For your optical drives you might want two - one burner and one reader.

Give yourself a budget and see what's available. A good place to start is one of the big manufacturers' sites like Dell. Look at the prices and options available in your price range. Given what you've said, if I were going to save a few bucks, I'd start by cutting back on the processor speed.

I would consider manufacturers' outlet stores for discontinued models and refurbished returns.

BTW, while I like the Dell site's customization routines, I actually don't own a Dell. Most of my computers are IBM and they also make a good solid machine.

It all depends on how much money you are looking to spend. I have to tell you though, I bought two eMachines from WalMart for my children and they have performed extremely well. I paid around $600 each for them and their performance is very impressive. Their performance is almost comparable to my Gateway GT5012 that I paid $1200 for, (without monitor).

They come with cd/dvd burners and 17" flat screen monitors.
