Of course it's important to take notes in college. Often, the professors don't give handouts or study guides and they also often lecture on stuff that's not covered in the textbooks. And even if they do lecture straight from the texts, it'll help your recall come test time if you write the important parts of lecture out as she outlines them. I teach composition and tech/report writing at a university, so here's a few lecture techniques I use to help them know what's important (naturally, I think it's all important, but you know what I mean):
Repitition of key concepts, phrases, or field-specific terms.
Prefacing something with "this is important."
Asking them, subtlely, to rephrase what I've just said to ensure they've grasped it.
Once in a while, for some unknown reason, they all just sit there, their eyes glazed and mouths open. In these situations, I tell them flat out to open their notebooks because I hold them accountable for knowing and understanding everything I say in lecture.
Long and short of it: Yes. Notes are probably the most important part of going to class. They help you remember the material; they help you synthesis new material with old; and, equally as important, practicing note taking skills will help you throughout your college career.

Depends on the class. If the teacher reads straight out of the book, then probably not.
Highlighting in a book can be as useful as jotting down the teacher's comments.
It's pretty dependent on the class and individual.
I really only took notes if I knew it was related to the exam. That's cuz I knew I'd rarely look at it ever again. Still, the act of physically writing stuff down helps you remember what that stuff is.

Yes, it is necessary, check you spelling and you will know that if you had taken notes on spelling you would have known you spelled necessary wrong. You take notes in any class you are in and take them on the important facts the teacher tells you.
