Is it better to turn the heat off before you leave for the day and turn it back on OR does it cost more to warm the house back up than it would to just keep it on all day? I am usually gone for 9-10 hours a day. thanks!

It is on of the most common "myths" that it is cheaper to turn down/off the heating system during the day. Actually is is most economical to set it at one specific temperature and leave it there all the time. The problem is that you aren't just warming the air, but everything inside your house, IE: furniture, walls, floor, studs within the walls, etc. Once you get every thing warm it is easier to keep it warm that to constantly warm it than let it cool, warm it than let it cool. over and over again.

We use a digital set back thermostat because where we live the cost per kilowatt and therms is higher during the day than after 5 PM. We have a central gas heater but the fan runs on electric. Check your utility provider's website. Ours has a calculator that tells you how much it is to run certain appliances at certain times and if you are in the baseline usage or over it. We always use more kilowatts and therms than the baseline and since the rates are staged by useage it would be so much more expensive to leave the furnace running all day than to have it go on an hour or so before we are home. That being said, if you do not have a programmable digital set-back on your thermostat, our utility provider suggests setting the thermostat to 68 degrees during the day and heating it up once you arrive home.

Get a programmable they are only about $30.00 you can put it on your self just look on your old one for how many wires you have each one is for a certain operation like green is air cond yellow is fan etc. buy one that has same number wire hook up you have then you just set it for 67 while your gone and 68-70 or were you like it when you return that way the heat or air don't have to run a lot to reheat your house

Just get a programable thermastat, and I beleive it does help to turn it down when your gone.
If you have natural gas ,you could also save by turning your water heater down.
