It's become so unbearable because now they skip the trailing edge music and go straight to the reality shows. There's hardly even music on MTV anymore (although whether the stuff played in the past can be defined as "music" is debatable).

There are probably plenty of problems. The first problem is they didn't want to play country because they wanted to play rock. That's ok, but then they started playing hip hop and rap which isn't rock. They should go back to only playing rock which was their core ideal and if not start playing country, jazz and a host of other types of music. The second problem they ran into was they didn't play enough different music videos. They would play the same 10 videos over and over for a couple of week. You can see on youtube hundreds of music videos so there was always enough music videos to keep things fresh. I think the reason why MTV got out of the music business was they got greedy. You see they probably pay royalitys everytime they play a video. They make more money by airing their own material because they don't pay any royalties. As far as I'm concerned, MTV died in the late 1980s when bubble gum pop by the likes of Britney Spears, Debbie Gibson, New Kids on the Block etc. hit the scene. Rap also became big on MTV then and grunge topped it off. CNN hit the scene then and was far more enetertaining so I lost interest in MTV except for the first couple of Real World shows (and even then it became overly produced and I stopped watching future seasons).

Mtv needs desperatly to go back to their roots. Mtv= music television not reality shows, there are pelnty of other channels to choose from. But just like other shows they base it on what the viewers want, which makes sense, but is completly wrong on what their station is advertising.
Perfect example: My wife and I were looking for specialty herb/spice store as the one before closed down. We found one called Herb and spice, went in and it was a pill store like a GNC, we walked right out along with the people never even acknowleged us.

I don't agree on it always sucking. Remember it was the pioneer for music videos back in the day. However, it seems it should be called MST {Music sometimes TV| Seems to hardly ever play music videos anymore, mostly reality shows{don't get me wrong, I actually like reality tv once in a while.}

It's not THAT bad, but the one reason I can think of is that it hardly plays music anymore besides TRL. Now it's just a lot of scripted dating games..... maybe you don't like those...?
