~~~I grew up in upstate NY and in the early 60's when I was little, we always had dinner at the dinner table with our family,My mom was a stay at home mom raising us 4 kids ,,always started out with a tossed salad. then we would have meat , potatos, and a vegtable. If the timming was right, just after dinner we would hear the ice cream truck comming down the street. Or my dad would take us to the local Ice cream Parlor. Rarely did we eat fast food back then. Oh and when we did, it was a treat! Sometimes my dad would take Mom and us kids to the park with a Bucket of KFC and we would feed the squirles or we would all go to the airport and have the 5cent burgers from Burger Park.
School: school lunches consisted of brown bagged PB &J with an apple and some cookies. If we wanted to buy lunch it was 25 cents which would buy you a hot cooked meal like spagettie, or meatloaf /mashed potatoes, fish sticks,,,always fruit jello. That was in the day when we had Cafeteria "ladies" serving up lunch. Oh and cant forget the really cool "glass" pint size milk with lunch too. I could go on and on,,,what a fun memory you just brought up.......you can email me if you like.........sounds like a fun project for you......
Penny mentioned a lot of the same things I grew up eating. I'll try to think of some others. I lived on a farm so we had chicken quite often, eggs --lots of eggs every way imaginable,but I still like them. We butchered our own animals so we had beef, and pork. Mom did a lot of canning of meat. We also had a smoke house and in winter did sausage and some ham as I recall.We had a large garden and raised vegetables which were canned. We had a woods off of one edge of the farm with virgin soil. Crabapples,plums, chokecherries, gooseberries, which made
jellies and jams. We also had apple and nut trees. We had wild strawberries and black berries our rare treats mmm good. Sometimes at school we had a dessert called harvest dessert. It was made of squash, but resembled pumpkin pie with a whipped topping.Then there were hot dogs, buns, butter and catsup or relish. Of course soup. There were hamburgers, baked beans, and other times cooked string beans, corn or peas. Raw vegetables like today and sometimes in the spring we had potato salad. Part of my time was in a private school so some of it might have been different. We also raised wild ducks and some geese which was food. (when they didn't become pets) We went fishing in the spring which was a sport and good eating early in the year. You may email me if you like and I'll try to help.
Fast food was not really popular in my early teens, but by my later years in high school, and then college, fast food was everywhere.
I ate most my meals at home, you know, Mom's cooking. She's from the south and it wasn't really healthy eating. When I was too busy with work or school to eat meals at home, it was strictly fast food.
Later in my college years, girls made me aware of healtier lifestyles, with exercise and proper nutrition.
Since then, I eat healthy when I can, and fast when I can't.
