Yes, there are. Some have lived there for generations, others are there as dependents of military or government people stationed in Hawaii, especially in and around Honolulu.

You must realize that the ethnic composition in Hawaii is not the same as that of any other states in the US. For example, whites (Caucasians) there total only 41% of the population whereas Asian-Americans make up the majority at over 57%. African-Americans amount to over 3%, a much smaller percentage than on the US mainland (10 to 12%) .

While there are far fewer black people there in Hawaii,as a percentage, compared to that on the mainland, you'll find a much more relaxed lifestyle there as far as racial issues are concerned. Since the whites are not in the majority, being a "nonwhite" person in the Aloha State doesn't mean quite the same as being one in the continental U.S.

of course black people are excepted here in Hawaii. I have a lot of black friends who moved here from mainland America. At first it was a culture shock for them because they felt like a minority since there is not much black people here but as you stay in the urban parts of Honolulu you will start to see more black people. To be honest white people are also excepted here too its just some neighborhoods especially in the rural areas or poverty stricken districts is where all the racism exist because of socio economic tensions. In my opinion white people exaggerate racism a little bit too much, they get all sensitive when they are called haole and most of the time locals don't even mean it in a negative way.

its very diverse there is just about every ethnic group in hawai'i, there are quite a few black people especially round the bases, dont know percentages.

for the person above who said racial tentions are relaxed you got to be kidding me, in elementry everybody hated white people, then in intermediate all the blacks kids were getting mobbed by hawaiian kids then in high schoool is somoans vs tongans.
