Typically your average over the road truck will hold anywhere from 200 to 300 gallons of diesel fuel. Average fuel economy depends on alot of factors such as the size of your load, whether you are pulling a flatbed trailer or van trailer, the shape of the tractor hood (flat hooded Peterbilt 379 model vs a more aerodynamic Kenworth T-2000) and engine model. The average is around 5 to 6 miles per gallon. Some guys say they get 7 mpg at times but that is pretty high.

I run a fleet of trucks where I work and the answer is it varies. It depends on the type of engine, transmission, weight the truck is carrying and the terrain. But an overall average is around 4 to 6 MPG. It does not sound like much and it isn't. That is one reason (along with road use taxes, etc.) that is costs so much to move freight from point A to point B. Hope this answers your question somewhat.

drove a 99 freightliner (with a detroit 60 engine) for a while, that came to about 5.5 avg. right now i have a newer peterbilt (cummings engine, a ISX) and that gets about 7 avg.
