I want to start eating healthier but I'm only 12 and my mom is almost against health food because she thinks it all tastes bad. She says that if something she makes is healthy on it's own, that is fine, but she won't try to be healthy on purpose. It isn't fair! I can't buy groceries for myself because I have no money. She says If I don't want to eat the unhealthy food I don'y have to, but it is all we have so my choice is to eat unhealthy food or not eat at all. To make matters worse she is constantly making cakes and puddinds and cookies and stuff. It isn't fair! And it is very confusing because almost every mom in the world would love it if their kid asked to eat healthier. What should I do?

We have fruits sometimes. Apples and bananas usually, sometimes oranges. But my mom won't buy fresh fruits and vegetables other than that unless it is for a recipe, and most of the things she makes that aren't desert are fried.

She couls easily afford healthier food. I am not overwieghtm but she is, and I am worried about my whole families health, but mostly mine, because I am average right now, but average can easily turn into obese.

start telling her about why she needs to eat healthy. My dad was the same way, BEFORE he had a heartattack. mabye you could learn to cook some and start asking for the things needed to make the food. I started cooking at age 3, and when I was 13 I started to be as healthy as posable. but I had to ask my parents for the "stuff" to make the food. email me for more ideas.

That is a very strange reaction for a mom to have. I think the only way is to talk to her and explain that you want to eat healthier because you are concerned about your helth. Junk food is full of ingredients that are bad for your heart, your weight, etc. If she really doesn't want to change her cooking/ shopping habits, just try to eat more veggies and fruits (I'm hoping she gives you fruits and veggies) and less of the stuff she cooks that you know is unhealthy.

Maybe if you go to the library, check out a book about healthy eating, and leave it laying around the house, she'll take a look at it and get the point.

Eating healthier doesn't mean eating "health foods", it means eating a balanced diet with fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and protein. You can do a lot of that yourself by just asking her to buy fruit! There are a lot of healthy desserts you can make, like baked apples(with or without ice cream), or a pumpkin custard. Slowly introduce those ideas to her. Ask for oatmeal cookies when she is baking, those are healthy, and ask her to add raisins. As she gets used to baking healthier things, she will be more willing to listen to your requests. Since your mom seems to think that healthy foods don't taste good, and desserts are a staple, just start with that. Ask her if she can teach you to cook, and pick out some health recipes you are interested in, a little help and company in the kitchen will encourage your mom to listen to you.

Man you mom is ****** up. First eating healthy does not taste bad. I eat heatly, have a low BMI and still enjoy my food. Health food does not neccesarally mean subusiding on tofu. Tell you mom to go look at herself in the mirror and ask herself if she is happy with how she looks and how it would be if you ended up just like her. I applaude your thinking and hey try a little hunger strike to get her to change her mind or attempt to compromise like just ask her to use the money she would spend on your portion of the food on just buying you healthier alternatives and say that you wil deal with the preparation and that she never has to even touch it. I hope I have been of some help.

Don't eat the things that she bakes. Learn how to cook on your own. I was cooking for a family of five when i was your age. Tell your mom that you want to cook for a change and tell her what you need for your recipe. Show her articles about how eating greasy and fatty foods can clog arteries and cause heart attacks. When she does the grocieries, go with her and sneak in some extra fruits and tell her you want an afternoon snack. Let her know that you lost the taste for baked goods and that your body is craving fresh fruits. Hope it works out.

sit her down.

tell her that 4 in 10 kids are obese and you don't wan to be one of them.

explain to her how much it would mean to you if you could eat properly.

tell her you'll make your own means

trust me if i had known more when I was younger I would have laid off the ice cream. haha.

It is the same price to buy healthy as it is to buy junk. I know because I buy healthy now.

If all else fails, go on an eating strike.
Just refuse to eat to any junk.

If your mother is a good mother she won't let you starve so she'll give in.

Why not talk to your dad?

Your Mom's feelings were probably hurt when you said you wanted to eat healthy. She probably feels she has done her best providing you with balanced meals.

I'm impressed with your wanting to improve your diet doing it the right way!!! Eating "health food" is more expensive, and can take more time to prepare.
Maybe try coming up with a meal plan for one week that includes some of the foods yuo're interested in trying... learn how to cook them, and offer to prepare dinner a couple of times a week, using the meals and foods you want.

Wow! Sounds tough! Ask you mom why she is so against health food. Cuz just because she hates it doesn't mean that you have too! If she still doesnt listen talk to the school nurse about it because some fruits have special nutrions in them that no other food can have.

that just seems crazy of your mom to not let you eat healthy foods. most moms encourage their children to eat more healthy. show your mom a picture of a really obese person and say that you could turn out like that if you keep eating unhealthy.

Maybe your Mom is trying to show you that you need to control your eating on the food that she is able to buy. There is no such thing as a endless budget you know. You can eat healthier and still eat your Moms food. Just say NO thanks to the cakes, puddings and stuff. I think you are being somewhat unreasonable to expect her to change her food budget just for your wants.
