I know this is a weird question..but here we go...Where were the Hispanics during slavery? I wanna know cause it all seems to be black & white and that’s where it ends. Well, what about us Hispanics? I know we around at that time but I never hear about it. Were we all up north…hiding out in NY? Were we considered black because we were not white? Because everything was based on the color of your skin, what would have happened to me? My mother is so light skinned she looks white and Im brown skinned and often people confuse me for black or Indian or whatever. Would they have separated me from her? I dunno, this may be a stupid question but I am curious. Please don’t be mean and tell me to go get an education, lol…I got one, thanx and as we all know when you learn about slavery in school all they teach about is what the African Americans went through and the horrible white ppl that brought them into slavery…never about Hispanics. Any real answer would be appreciated. Thanx

Slavery was big in the early 1700s and 1800s. Then they had the Civil War 1860,1,2,3,4and so on.
Mexicans and South & Central Americans were busy in their own countries having their own stuff happening. Most people in that era were just busy growing food to eat, tending animals for wool etc for clothes and barely getting by.
The Industrial Revolution was in the 1860s, 70s and up to the 1900s. Then factories and building of cities grew and rural country folk from all over the land (now I am talkign mainly England and America) wanted a "piece of the pie/action" and started arriving in the city (slums were next.) Not enough jobs were found and poor areas grew up.
Well, then you have 2 world wars. There were very few immigrants from the south of America until the early 1900s, and mainly the immigrants to America came from Europe. But Latinos came.
You do not hear about Latinos during slavery because there were not many around to make an impact on the culture. That is, until the later part of the 20th cnetury (1930 on). Big influxes of Latinos were seen in the time of Civil Rights since they (the countries to the south of us) saw that we have a good democracy and that we started treating people fairly, ( a thing that some of the Latin countries were not very good at at that point - Communist Cuba, drug-ridden Colombia etc)
has this helped? It is rather what a Brit calls "The Potted Version"

Latinos of today, who are descended from Spaniards, Natives and Africans, may have partial Spanish ancestry, which the Spanish are the ones who first arrived in the Americas before the English did. They were slave traders themselves, they worked the Natives to death and replaced them with African slaves. Then also raped their women as well. They traded slaves with the English, Portuguese, and others and they were helping each other during the Atlantic slave trade. Yes they were brutal, and if Black Americans read about this, they'll start calling Latinos ''Slave Trader!'' or ''White Mans partner in crime!'' While the Black Americans call white people ''Slave master!'' or ''Blued eyed devil!''.
Crazy and I'm Latino myself with partial Spanish and partial Indio blood, with a little bit of African.

They treated the natives of the Americas and the Caribbean like animals. They worked them to death. Entire tribal nations became extinct in North, Central, and South America by the Spanish who were mainly seeking gold. De Soto extinguished entire civilizations from Florida to Tennessee to the Mississippi River.
Before Africans were brought over to the New World, They first worked the natives to death and extinction. Haiti would be a prime example. Eventually, the black slaves in Brazil organized themselves and set up contracts with the Spanish and Portuguese. They outumbered the Hispanics, and the Hispanics could no longer practise slavery. They had to deal with the Africans as men and women on an equal basis. This is where the line "Black is beautiful" originated in Brazilian poetry. It wasn't unusual for White and black kids to be brought up together. This can be seen in many paintings. Before this, the natives were treated horribly by Portuagal and Spain. This was due to pressure from Lisbon and Madrid and poor decisions made by the pope in Rome. See the movie, "The Mission."

First of all, the term Hispanics was invented in the 1970s by a cabinet member of the Nixon administration. Second of all, many Latin American countries had slavery, in some cases long after it was abolished in the USA. Third of all, it wasn't about skin color. After all, the people who captured African slaves in the first place were black. The way people became slaves was by being on the losing side of a war, or kidnapped by slavers. Anyone from Latin America who could afford to travel to the USA was generally presumed to be free. I know, this is an incomplete answer.

Some good answers here. Many of the Spanish in the USA you are referring to here I assume, where located in the southwest and west. Many were wealthy Spanish, you know from Spain, just like in the Philippines, the Spanish conquered, killed and enslaved and then came the Catholic missions. The rich landowners came up through Mexico and brought or took away the Mexicans that worked the lands, The Mexicans themselves were land owners, farmers and ranchers primarily in Texas. Rather than slavery, the Spanish used the share cropper method as many white Americans were. I am not aware in the USA that any amount of Hispanics were sold or bartered as slaves.

Lisbon is Europe's second-oldest capital and once house to the world's greatest explorers like Vasco da Gama, Magellan and Prince Henry the Navigator, getting the first true world city, the capital of an empire scattering over all continents, from South America (Brazil) to Asia (Macao, China; Goa, India) and know you are able to spend a couple of day to know that historical city, with hotelbye is wherever you need to start. Probably the most recognized of Lisbon's significant attractions may be the St. George's Castle. This fortress commands a fantastic position near Alfama on the crown of a hill overlooking the Portuguese capital. This is certainly one of Lisbon's most popular tourist destinations. Its impressive battlements, engaging museum, and intriguing archaeological site mix to really make the fort a gratifying knowledge for the whole family, and kids particularly will like clambering within the strong surfaces and towers that encircle the grounds.

I'm sure your right and there were some Hispanics in the states of the Union at the time of the Civil War and even before, but they were not as prominate as today.
My guess is that they would be near the Mexician border, and perhaps Fla and Tx and other border states.
The influx of immigrant was heavy during the Civil War. But most were from the European countries. Any migration of Spanish/Mexicians would have been closer to countries, states, and areas where like languages were spoken.
To check it out more, do searches on Mexican/American history

The Spanish Conquistadores murdered and enslaved the indigenous peoples of the western world.Hispanic culture is a co-mingling of European Spanish and Portuguese cultures,African culture and Indigenous(native)culture. The native languages and African tribal languages have contributed words to the language of the Spanish and Portuguese conquerors.Hispanic peoples have mixed ancestry that may include any of the races populating the regions of South and Central America and the Caribbean islands from which they emigrated. The Hispanic people lived under the rule of the Spanish and Portuguese Empires.

Where slavery was prevalent, the American South, there were few Hispanics. The economies of the US and Mexico were not as dissimilar as they are today, especially in the agrarian South, so there wasn't as much of a need to immigrate. Most Hispanics you are probably referring to only entered this country in the last century.
There were a good amount of Hispanics in the west as that was still very close to the Mexican way of life. Work was not as easy to find in the South, however.
