Michelangelo Buonarotti was his name. When he was born, his mother was too sick to nurse him, so he was sent to a wet nurse in a stone cutter's family. He attributes his fascination with art to this family. His father was furious when Michelangelo told him he wanted to become an artist. Here's a really cool website:

If you'd like to read more about him, Irving Stone wrote a book about Michelangelo's life called The Agony And The Ecstasy.

Born in 1475, Michelangelo's artistic talent revealed itself early in his life, often to his family's dismay. His precocious drawings would occasionally elicit beatings from his father who wished to persuade the youth to follow a more honorable and lucrative profession than that of an artist. Fortunately, Michelangelo's stubborn refusal to abandon his talent persuaded his father to apprentice him to a Florentine artist at age fourteen. Mankind was awarded a creative talent whose genius was recognized not only in his own time, but in the generations to follow.

It was arduous work, requiring the artist to constantly work on his back atop a scaffold that raised him up to within inches of the ceiling. After four years, Michelangelo revealed a masterpiece.

Michelangelo, through his grandmother, was distantly related to the Medicis. On her request, the Medicis had Michelangelo join their entourage, and he was introduced to the best artists in the land.

In his day there were 'studios' that accredited painters/sculptors had and a kid might do the grunt work. I wonder if he was apprenticed like that? Just a thought.

He probably said... "Hey, I think I want to paint something." So, then he did and said, "WHOA! I'm amazing." Then he said "I wonder if I can sculpt." Then he did and he said, "Man, I'm amazing and a very, very gay man."
