A psychiatrist is a MD, therefore, it takes many years of school, including medical school, internships, residency, etc.
A psychologist is a Phd, which also takes many years of eduction.
A Counselor can be a Phd, or Social Worker, but to get a private practice started would require at least a a Masters' Degree
I think, however, that if you cannot articulate what it is you are interested in, you should consider another field.

Psychologist or Psychiatrist. Psychology helps you deal with problems, talk it out, setting goals, different problem solving techniques. They can give you tests as well, see about your personality, who you are. They study behaviours and minds.
A Psychiatrist is a specialist that can give you medications for your problems, they help you deal with mental illnesses, like bi-polar, multiple personalities, severe depression, while working on the root of the problems. It all depends what area of counseling you want to get into.
There are youth workers counselors, marriage counseling, emotional counseling, etc...You can go to university for 4 years to get your Bachelor of Arts, then go into whatever field of counseling you prefer.
Check it out at the local college or university on-line, you would like to attend, they usually have a list of all courses that are available in counseling fields, some may only take a year to take or up to 4 years university for a BA.
Just depending what you are looking for. Counselling is the shortest, then Psychology, then Psychiatry.

There's a Therapist, a psychologist, or a psychiatrist. They all require at least 4 years of college for a BS. More for a Masters and even more for a ph.d.

Do you mean a psychiatrist or a psychologist? I think you're looking at at least four to eight years of college.
