My boss is a monster, he is degrading and very demanding, I go home at night feeling worthless. He doesn't pay me overtime, I have no benefits and if I take time off it is without pay. I just want to quit. Do I really have to give him two weeks notice?

No, 2 weeks notice is something you do as a favour to your employer to give them adequate time to find a replacement for you. If you hate your job and want to leave, say "I quit" and walk out. You may want to have your address on a peice of paper to give them to send you your last check.

Every job I have quit and given notice, I usually try to give more than two weeks and I'll work up to that last day. The reason is I want to be able to come back if I ever wanted to. Fortunately, I am lucky enough though to have jobs like that. Other people I know give two weeks, work one of the weeks, and then use their unused vacation time for the last one.

Anyway, two weeks is old news and is as useless as 3,000 mile oil changes. The simple fact is you either leave your employer and give them a sufficient notice or you give them no notice. Neither way is illegal but no notice will usually burn a bridge.

Additionally, you don't need to give any reason other than the fact you can't or don't want to work there anymore.

If you just want to be bitter as hell like that, then NO.

However, I wouldn't recommend that. Be professional and give the 2 week notice, then candidly explain why you are quitting. Please keep in mind that you are gonna need him as a reference, and the last thing you want is for him to say something negative about you. Just don't be brutally honest and tell him that you're just plain sick of him, though!!

It also helps to have something else lined up. You don't wanna quit and just be out of work. It could take you another hundred years to find another job.

Given that he will likely give you a back reference anyway, I guess you could just quit, but since you are a professional, you should give 2 weeks notice. You don't want to come out looking as bad as this guy.

Stick it to him and just quit. That's what I did once... in fact, I hated the job so much, that I went for my lunch hour, and just never showed up again. That's what you should do.
