I have an audition for the musical Guys and Dolls soon and I have picked out a song and I am pretty confident. but I was wondering where are you supposted to look when you sing. I've been told to make eye contact with the director, but don't stare. I have also been told to pick a spot on the wall and not look at them at all. What should I do?

Oh the song is El Fandango from Wagon Wheels West if that matters at all

If you are worrying about looking at the director or trying to focus on a spot on the wall when giving your audition then you are not performing and will not get the part.

That may sound harsh but it's true!

In a singing audition for a musical you are not jsut showing you can sing but that you can act - in a musical the songs develop the story and carry along the action.

While singing the song of your choice think about WHAT you are singing and let your eyes - and the rest of your body - relate to the words. In other words EXPRESS the song - ACT the song. This may mean at times you are looking at the director and at times staring straight out to the 'auditorium'.

The main thing is this - don't sing to anyone - PERFORM for everyone.

It's an audition - they want to see you sparkle!

PS - El Fandango is a great number - plenty to enjoy as you deliver it. Best of luck

You need to focus at an eye-level spot on the wall. It works best if this spot is a couple feet above the directors. Whatever you do, do NOT look the directors in the eye. This makes most directors very uncomfortable. Try to think of an imaginary acting partner and play the song to them. I'm not familiar with El Fandango, but the most common acting partner is a person's shrink, since people tell shrinks everything. It can be anyone though, a spouse, sibling, parent, friend, enemy, it usually depends on the song. Break a leg at your audition! Guys and Dolls is a lot of fun.

Introduce yourself to the director. Then don't look at him.

Wear neutral pants and a formal but bright shirt. If you get callback, wear the same clothes... washed of course.

Now to your question. Look at the wall. Figure out who you are singing to then project them onto the back of the auditorium. This works for a few reasons:

1. Helps you project if you sing to the person
2. Keeps you from getting nervous
3. Looks great on stage

Break a leg. Hope you get the part.

Look in the direction of the director but just over his/her head. Move your eyes around. Your actions should match the passion of the song.

In my experience the director would prefer not to be engaged in anything but watching you work. It might help you to think of someone to whom you'd like to sing the song, and in your imagination, put that person behind, slightly above and to the left of the director.
