It depends on what their contract says. Every publisher-author agreement will be different, depending on many factors including size of the publisher, the price the publisher paid to publish the book, the author's notereity, the number of books in the contract, the cover price of the book etc.

The amount the author actually profits from the actual sales of a book has a lot to do with how much the publisher shelled out intially for the advance. Oftentimes, authors start collecting royalties once the advance has been "earned back" which can take a while.

The percentage differs with each publisher (I talking legitimate and not self publishers, or vanity presses, and not Publish America) But it's usually based on the retail price of each book sold, and can range from 4 to 15%. (foreign rights add to that). You can get a better idea by checking out the guidelines of some publishers and look under what they pay.

Lots of authors also have an agent. The agent receives the royalties first, and take their 10 to 15 % out before paying the writer.

And don't forget that if your book is published you might get an Advance, this amount of money is meant to be spent on promoting your work, and it is paid off first, with the royalties before you start getting anything.

Note too that epublishers will pay higher %'s some up to 40%, but they also charge WAY less for the books they put out. (I've seen them as low as 3$)

No. Her publisher files the returns since they sell the books. She sells to them. Edit: No. Her income is always coming from the first publisher. Your fantasy is more applicable to athletes who actually play in the different countries like tennis or golf players. They do have to file in each country since they actually perform there to get the income.
