HAHA I'm thinking the same thing!! Especially if I watch American Idol! (OMG I was sooo done after the 1st season!) The motives have got to be one or a combo of the following:
1. a dare
2. wanting 15 minutes of fame
3. they honestly think they can sing that well
4. their friends/family keep lying to them & telling them they can sing cause they don't have the guts to tell them they're horrible.

I've seen the 4th happen in my own group of friends. We have one person who is ok when it comes to karaoke & stuff but he wants to try out for American Idol (or at least talks about it) but we don't have the guts to stand up & tell him he is NOT good enough. Nobody wants to hurt a friend or family member's feelings.

Fortunately some of us (including myself) are lucky. We can sing somewhat well but are at least humble enough & have the common sense to KNOW that we wouldn't make it on a show or in a competition such as that.

Unfortunately the people who do audition for singing and sound like someone has stood on the cat, really seem to be under the impression that they can indeed sing. You get the few who are there just as a joke and know that they sound awful, and are just there for the attention. I think somewhere along the line all the family and friends of these people who sound so bad have let them down, by not telling them the hard truth. My kids do music at school and the amount of times that I have gone to their mid term concerts to sit through some young girl (and it does usually seem to be girls) screech her way through a song. If I were there mother I would say, 'hey I think you should try something else'. But everyone claps and says well done, then walks away and rubs their ears.
Everyone has a different skill or talent. A friend of mine has a daughter who has the most wonderful voice and hopefully she will make it in the singing world. My daughter has a voice like fingernails on a chalkboard. But then she dances beautifully and is a high achiever at school.
But I think that somewhere these delusional people should have been told that they sound awful.

The people know they can't sing but they just want to get their 15 minutes of embarassing fame. Some of them don't even know they can't sing, they really think they can.

Many people who can't sing actually think they can . Many have been scammed by voice coaches who were being paid to train them and others have been lied to by friends and family for years to prevent hurt feelings. I believe a little honesty is the best policy.

I think it all goes back to wanting those 15 seconds of fame - even if you make yourself look like an idiot doing it.
I also thing some people were taught they could do ANYTHING; that's true only if you have the talent to do it, which is what good-natured motivators (mom & dad, teachers, mentors, etc.) fail to add.
Let's face it - unless you're born with a great voice, you're never going to have one. Best to just stick with what you CAN do best!!!

Well, the thing is, everyone can sing. It's just that some sing well and some don't. And unfortunately, the ones that don't-think they do!

Nobody was ever brave enough to tell then they couldn't sing... my parents told me at an early age. Of course, I'd already tried out for competitions (failed bad and couldn't understand).

I have been trying to figure this out...I mean, if I had a friend or family member that couldn't sing (which I do), I would let them know BEFORE they got on national TV and embarassed themselves.

i think some people just doit to be stupid and hope to gain fame out of being dumb lyke dat one guy how sung she bangs she bangs hes asian n last name hung. but yeah and others do it for trill, fun, or a joke or bet. Others really think they can sing because some people will truley believe they can sing until they here themselves recorded.

If you are talking about American Idol, it's because they want to be so bad as to get their 30 seconds of fame. William Hung knew he was a bad singer and got his whole 15 minutes of fame.
