Is it true it's worse than prison?

I volunteered in a homeless shelter and they do have rules in place that are necessary. Other than a few rules, like what time you have to be in, or noise rules, it does not remotely resemble prison. I used to work my buns off cooking and cleaning with no offers of help from the residents. That was what finally made me quit, if they could stand and watch me work without helping I may as well be home doing my own housework.
