Religion, no matter what you believe in seems to have on central person/persons they focus on. Teaching are often very similar, but there are many different interpretations of them and how extreme they are held as a belief. My question is, why is religion such a great cause of violence and hardships for our earth, if in fact religions are supposed be the study and worship of ideas?

iv always been a christian, but truthfully, i just started going to church and i just started really having faith.... at church on wednesdays we have a kind of bible lesson... one of the first things discussed (when i started going) was how to react to someone without faith or someone that disagrees etc....we were discussing basically against the theory of evolution... we are taught to show that person respect, and even let them say everything they have to say. then we explain our side from what we have learned from the bible.... however i personally know that some people don't see when you argue with them that you are showing respect. they think that you are disrespecting them by being unwavering in your opinion and in disagreeing in the first place..... its just that so many of us are hardheaded and dont like to be disagreed with. and since everyone holds their beliefs strongly, they are more easily offended. religion just happens to be one of the more controversial beliefs.

I don't religion is the cause of divides, usually it more to do with economic and historical differences. However religion does act as a catalyst in these situations. For example the Israel-Palestine conflict was caused by a mixture of Jewish Immigration, British, French and U.N mismanagement and the fact that the USA and USSR used the conflict as a proxy war. However once religious motivation was added to the conflict it became worse and more intractable.

The same story is true in Northern Ireland, Bosnia etc...

the real problem in the people who dont understand the real meaning of the religion and want to force all other to follow and believe in them

the great divider is our mind, mechanism which suppose to unite,,well we still have no idea of how to use that faculty within our Consciousness. Anything which comes from human mind design to divide one way or another, not just religion...

I don't believe religions are to blame. People use religion as an excuse.

"the greatest atrocities have been done in the name of God" Enough said... [Inquisition, persecution(think pilgrims, Jews, all sorts of immigration), twin towers, crusades, witch hunting...]

we must keep in mind though, that many people take advantage of religion and twist it so it is to blame in several occassions.
