Essentially, someone who won't leave other people alone, physically and/or verbally. People who are smothering tend to be controlling, over-possessive, and be people who have little respect for other people's psychological and physical space.

A smothering personality is someone who's overprotective, and condescending. He constantly keeps a close watch on your every move. He constantly calls you on the phone and asks WHAT are you doing at that very moment.? In the psychic sense and literal sense; he is right in your face and in your inner space. He doesn't give you any room to breathe. You literally feel "suffocated". and "boxed" in. So you feel "smothered" by this huge and strong figure in your life.
He looms over you like a dark shadow. His eyes peer right into your very soul dissecting you with his looks. He makes you feel uncomfortable.amd squeamish. He becomes obssessed with you. He's a control freak! He orchestrate every aspects in your life. He comments on your hairstyle, fashion, and behavior. He even corrects how and what you eat. He forbids and selects who your friends are. He even has the makings of a potential stalker.
He is a person who you want to avoid because he makes you feel uncomfortable. He wants to change you as a person. He can't accept you for what you are.! He wants you to be an exact clone of him.

Having been smothered by several people, I found they all lacked ability to make right decisions if they had to sacrifice anything, all were more concerned of others' perception of them, tended to be more self-centred and self-absorbed, lacked self-esteem, and were basically paranoid that they would be hurt. I found them to be untrustworthy and unreliable and tended to distort facts to suit their needs. If they found someone was negative toward them, they did one of two things; worked hard to change that person's opinion or were confrontational and challenging. Just the perfect person to have as a friend or family member. The last thing is they tended to interfere with my decision-making a lot. Even though they couldn't make any decisions most of the time. Hope this helps. Peace.

Good answer from Celery Tre. Additionally, if you begin to feel worn out and down after you've been around someone like this, it's for sure they're too needy.
