yes, but Petsmart is not a great place to get healthy or well bred hamsters. They sell wholesell animals that you have no idea where they came from or who bred them. Also being a shelter manager I have received so many complaints about the health of the small animals that come from there. Sick, biting, unsocial, under fed, broken bones, pregnant, wrong sex, and lice are just a few to speak with. If your intent to getting one there, please do some research and really look at the animal before you buy it. Be sure they can handle it and it doesnt bite them before you buy it. Also dont let them tell you what the sex it and believe them. Unless a hamster is an adult male its hard to tell for someone not experianced.
Petsmart may say they sell same sex store by store, but they do not 100% of the time when it comes to hamsters and mice. They will tell you they do not garentee the sex (male or female).

Of all the big chain pet stores that I have seen and been into, PetSmart seems to treat them best... separated by sex, fed fresh foods along with mixes, clean cages, and supposed to be handled daily by staff. Whether or not that happens all the time at every store is not guaranteed but it's the general experience from all the ones I have been in.

Did you know that the natural habitat for a hamster is desert, as an aggressive territorial animal (unless a dwarf hamster)? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hamster

Or... get a rat. :-) They are much sweeter, more interactive, trainable, and generally less prone to aggressive biting than you find with a hamster. Occasionally you may be confused with tasty food but usually it's only a grab with the mouth until they realized they got you instead! I got bit once by one in the store because it was really stressed and I didn't realize it. All my own rats are chosen for health and temperment and have never, ever, bitten from fear or aggression. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fancy_rat

Yes! They do sell hamsters of all sorts! The interesting thing about Petsmart is that each store will only sell small animals of one sex: either male or female.

That way they try to help stop uncontrolled breeding of small animals.

Yes, but keep in mind their employees are not always knowledgeable. I went to buy a hamster there, and the one I chose was in a cage with another one. The salesperson convinced me to take both so they could stay together. He said they were brothers. I took both of them home and later one of them had babies. So the salesperson either lied or didn't know better. I have heard other stories about them being wrong about the sex of their animals.

Buyer beware!

They provide a 14 day guarantee on all the pets they sell and they are usually healthy. I just got a Gerbil last week and he is doing great so far. And from what I have seen, they only carry the same sex at one location.... but then another in town will have the opposite sex, but never in the same location.

Customers all over the United States have reported that PetSmart is selling sick and injured animals, including guinea pigs with eye and upper respiratory infections, sick and dying betta fish, and many kinds of suffering birds, including mite-infested parakeets, a cockatoo who was screaming and bobbing up and down out of stress, an African grey parrot and a macaw who were tearing out their own feathers, and a Jardin’s parrot who was very ill in a dirty cage with filthy water.

Yes. Most of their hamsters are babies, so not pregnant. They also keep them in separate cages, so even an adult should be safe to get. Be sure to handle it at the store though... some are friendlier than others.
