Need to upgrade my Dell XPS (only got one gig of RAM). Currently runs with a singled GB DDR2 SDRAM stick at 677mhz. Are there any compatiblity issues (or any issues) if I install another DDR2 1GB stick, but at 533mhz? Is it ok to have different speeds on one PC?

Thanks.

In theory it will work, and all the ram will just clock down to the speed of the slowest module. Which would kind of defeat the purpose of you having 1gb of 677 in the first place. It may also introduce weird system incompatibilities or other "weirdness" (yes, I know, a very technical term).

If someone's just giving you the memory for free, I'd try it. But if you're purchasing it yourself, just spend the extra three bucks on 677 at http://www.newegg.com and get ram that matches the speed and manufacturer of the other stick, to avoid any possible problems.

yes, depending on the bus. If i had the model number, i could tell you for sure, but i cant. There are not many computers today, except those dimensions dell put out on 01' that used thier own special "RD" memory that cant use two chips of different speeds. Keep in mind though, the slower the speed of the ram, the less of an effect you will see. i know i have 4 gb and i cant complain, but in my old laptor i was running 768 with no room for expansion. I would hate to see you waste all that money to find out that its not worth it in the end.

Good Luck

You can call Tiger Direct to see if it is compatible with your motherboard--have your computer model number ready. You can get their phone number at Tigerdirect.com. Also--1 gig of ram is enough for most applications.
