To tell you the truth, it was becase of Foreign Assistance.

Some strange answers here. General Cornwallis traveled north from South Carolina to squeeze the American forces and join his counterpart that was to move south from New York. In doing this he was expecting supplies etc from British ships arriving up the York river on the Virgina peninsula at Yorktown. What he didn't know was at last the French fleet had arrived to destroy or run blockade to prevent him from obtaining the supplies etc. The American forces had him blocked in and surrender was his only option. Cornwallis had his sword surrendered by an underling, and that is considered the end of the war. Note that battles still existed in the north. Because Cornwallis surrendered the Americans considered that a victory and the end of British rule.
