Lighthouse keeper, slept in and forget to turn light on causing ship to sink. He discovers this when wakes up and realizes what he's done and commits suicide.

he is (or was) a scientist who has being reading about quantum suicide and decided to set up an experiment that triggers or not triggers a gun aimed at his temples with a 50-50 chance depending on which way a single photon of light is polarized.
looks like it didnt work though.
or at least in *this* universe it didnt . . . !

Isn't this the small rural airport problem? The tower staff fell asleep. He woke up to see it was late (and dark), turned on the runway lights, saw wreckage, then felt guilty.
