I suppose because the main ingredient of this chocolate isn't chocolate but sugar. The total amout of chocolate (cocoa and cocoa butter put together) seldom rises above 35 %. In France, this stuff wouldn't even be allowed to be named chocolate.
It's so disgusting I have to make my own chocolate : I buy bittersweet or pure chocolate, I melt it with butter, sometimes cream and add sugar and yolks. I let it cool down and form truffles that I coat with unsweetened pure cocoa powder. THAT's the real stuff. It's so much tastier. Plus it's so much healthier...

When I ate milk chocolate, I always ate Cadbury's or Ghirardelli (a San Francisco chocolate maker) ... but now I eat only 'dark chocolate' and find that I can't get 'good chocolates' at any other than 'specialty chocolate shops.' I agree with you that Hershey's is minging ... and I wish we could get a good Cadbury bar in dark chocolate here ... oh, well ... I guess I'm 'stuck' with either Ghirardelli's 'fancy dark chocolates,' or from specialty stores, but only FOR NOW because EVERYONE is getting on the 'dark chocolate bandwagon' and soon I hope that even Cadbury will have some, too.

You can't beat a bit of Cadbury's from good old Birmingham! I used to like Hershey's kisses when I was little but they now they taste like they have been in the back of the cupboard for about 5 years. However, have you tried Hershey's Cookies and Cream bar? .Mmmm, I am going to NYC in a couple of weeks maybe I'll stock up on a few bars.

The one thing I do prefer abour American chocolate is the variety. I love Reese's Peanut Butter stuff and Butterfinger Bars and they're really hard to find over here (UK!)

Dark chocolate, which Europeans use/make more of, is better...and that's coming from an American.
