Wi-Fi is a wireless connection. If your laptop has, for example, Intel Centrino Mobile Technology, than you can connect to wireless routers. In any starbucks or second cup with a "Hotspot" sign in the door, it means that they have free wireless internet. You can also buy a wireless router for your home. Look here: http://www.dlink.com/products/?pid=316 that is the company where i bought mine

Not *a* wi-fi, just wi-fi. It's the capability to access the Internet wirelessly, given a wi-fi capable device, a wireless router, and an internet connection.
Some coffee shops and whatnot offer free wi-fi. Some make you pay for it. There are plans you can sign up for with certain providers, but they're expensive, and they still only work at places that have that specific provider. You shouldn't need any sort of extra software to connect at a free wi-fi spot. If you have trouble with it, someone at the establishment will have to help you.

wi-fi is short of wire free or wireless, it is a form of networking with out having to use the RJ45 jack (the one for wired LAN) basically you can find out by going (i'm asuming you have windows) start>connections>show all connections then look for something along the lines of "wireless internet connection" if its there you have it though it will say media not connected. if it isn't the media may be on it maybe not, so click on the icon for it and it will search for networks in range do this in a coffee shop and it will come up, click connect, thats all there is to it though do make sure it is turned on before you try to connect to anything! not the laptop the wireless card or usb adaptor for you laptop.
