Alpha Centauri is the third brightest star in the sky. It is also the closest visible star. The distance from the earth is about 4.3 light-years. One light -year is equal to 5,880,000,000,000 miles. Of course, the Sun is also a star, and would be by far the closest.

You mean what star is closest to earth.
It is Proxima Centauri, close to Alpha Centauri, 4.5 light-years from us.
Alpha from the constellation Centaurus is a system of three stars. Proxima is the closes to us. Alpha is the brighter.

prox. centuri- then Alpha centuri. (proximus- meaning close to, in approximation)
but then our sun is also considered a star. so more importantly, what are you defining as "star"? a star like our sun hosts planetary bodies that orbit it. others may not.
