follow up question: how do you find out from their tax id, what kind of 503c it is, etc?

501(c)(3) is a section of the Tax Code that covers charitable, educational, religious, etc organizations. These entities have to file for this status and must disclose to anyone inquiring what their status is. Donations to 501(c)(3) groups are tax deductible. I'm not sure their tax ids offer any clue as to their tax status.
