My husband is a Realtor, but if I had to look for one, I would probably ask my friends or accountant or attorney if they knew of anyone they would recommend. You might also contact the local Chamber of Commerce or Better Business Bureau. You could also contact your area's Board of Realtors and ask for a referral.

I actually am a Realtor, so I needn't look far. However, depending on where you live, take a look around critically at Realtors who are doing business in the area you are interested in. That Realtor will be aware of values in the area, and can be sure to advise you well, so you don't overpay. Another tried and true way of locating a good Realtor is to ask around. Ask your friends, family, neighbors, and co-workers who they used. If they were pleased with the level of service, then that's a good indication of what to expect. You can also interview a few, in order to make sure you're comfortable and personalities mesh. It is important to know that when you are buying your first house, you should have someone who will be patient and not pressure you. It is a huge investment, and you need to feel confident while making your decision. Also, make sure your Realtor will walk you through the process, and oversee it from start to finish. That is your Realtor's job, and a good Realtor will be there for you, from start to finish.
Good luck in your home search!!

My cousin just happened to be a realtor so I used her (which was a big mistake) but I think it works just as well to go to the website of a reputable company like Century 21. They should list all of the realtors and give a brief history so that you can make an informed decision.

The first time, the Internet. Big mistake. We were not pleased with her at all.

The second time we asked for referrals from friends and family and found a lady at church who is a Realtor. We were very pleased and will continue to use her services when needed.

You could look in the Sunday's paper for more options. There are lots of open houses on Sunday.

You can always talk to an agent from any realties in your area. If this doesn't work out for you, try driving around town and look for house for sale signs.
