I've found a tutor for lessons but I'm not sure about which guitar to buy, that would be good for a beginner. My budget is $150.

I'd seriously consider Ibanez, I have Gibson Les Pauls, Jacksons, and Ibanez. All are excellent, but you can get a good quality ibanez for not much more than 150. ( You could get an acoustic, cause with an electric, the amp will match the guitar) As far as starter packs, I'd stay away from them, there pretty much crap.

Also, stay away from guitar center, their guys are there to make the sale, and know nothing about music, I and a couple people I know have busted them in lies.

If you can go just a little bit higher ($200) you can get a very nice one called the Epiphone by Les Paul. It's a great starter guitar...lots to grow into. It's a starter pack...has a low end amp...etc.....very nice deal. I'd look long and hard at that. What a great birthday gift by the way.

I got a Fender one for about $200 for my birthday. It's pretty good for a country guitar (My friend told me that).

fender and gibson typically have beginner starter packs that are pretty reasonable.
stay away from wal*mart, go to guitar center or a local music store.
