First, file a complaint with the state licensing board. It won't cost you a thing and will get additional heat on the contractor.

Next, since your $6k is likely over the small claims limit, go talk to an attorney about it.

He can sue for you and also request attorney fees. He will need the following
1) A copy of whatever contracts you both signed
2) A copy of your cancelled checks or money orders (proof that you paid)
3) A summary of what was supposed to happen and what did (or didn't).
4) And of course the name, address, license number, etc.. of the contractor.

go get em......

Call local magistrate and see what the limit is to sue in their court, you don't need an attorney if you can do it there. If they don't handle cases over 6 grand, hire an attorney, problem is tho you will have to pay alot and it will be time consuming. what I would do is find out what the limit is in magistrate court and sue for that amount-it beats getting nothing.

Good luck finding the guy or getting your money back without first paying out several hundreds or possibly thousands more in legal fees TRYING to get the money assuming he hasn't pissed it all away on beer or strippers. Never pay anyone upfront like that and honestly, good luck to you!

Do what ca_survey said. In MA I believe it's 5k for small claims. What's his name, we had a guy do the same thing to us in central mass.
