Run your towels through a vinegar wash about 1/4-1/2 cup full will do for a full load. It will get all of the old detergent residue out of the towels. The residue is what is likely making your towels smell bad.

Adding too much fabric softener cna cause your towels to feel slimey when they come out of the washer...I have made that mistake. I put vinegar in the cup that is for fabric softener and have not had a probelm. It really worked great for getting the musty smell out of clothes that had been sitting in the washer for 6 days when our power went out this winter.

Just hang them to dry in open air or a very airy area of your house; smell could be do to the humidity of S'pore's air, and stale room conditions.
Try washing them adding some tablespoons of sodium bicarbonate which you can buy at the supermarket during the process (also put some in an open container, in the closet where you store them, as it absorbs smells).

try putting them in the wash and letting them soak with your detergent and about a cup of baking soda, then use a double amount of fabric softener. Hope this helps. You can soak them overnight without harming them, the baking soda will remove most odors.
