I have read this book recently and found it very moving.
The novel manages to capture the innocence of childhood and the terrible effects of fighting in the ww1.
evidently about 300 soldiers were executed for desertion and cowardice. The novel deals with these issues through the characters of 2 brothers.
I understand that it is only recently that the British government has granted posthumous pardons to the soldiers concerned.
