No inter-national friendship last "forever". Circumstances change, and so do national interests. However a future strategic friendship between Russia and the U.S. is a very reasonable possibility. This strategic friendship would not be an emotional entanglement but an arrangement based on common interests. The major common interest that makes this idea possible is the growth and strategic ambitions of China.
China seems to have three strategic goals. The primary one is to unite Taiwan with the mainland. To do this they will need to build military forces capable of threatening all American interests in the Far East. The growth of a Chinese power seriously able to threaten America will be of tremendous concern to India and Vietnam ( both of which have fought China since the nineteen-sixties ) and Japan. These countries will be able to bring serious economic and diplomatic pressure on the US to remain engaged in the Far East.
The secondary one is to take control of Russian Eastern Asia and Siberia - mineral and energy rich areas. In recent years Chinese settlers have moved into those regions as the Native Russian population declines - a process that Moscow is monitoring carefully. It will be at least a decade before that situation becomes a real and present danger, but that is the way events are moving.
The third one is the recovery of Outer Mongolia. A feature of Chinese policy is the attempt to recover areas that were part of the Chinese Empire at its height - to re-unite Greater China and reverse the losses of the nineteenth century. Tibet has already been recovered and control re-established over Inner Mongolia. Although this is lower on the Chinese list of desirable geo-political outcomes it is a permanent feature of Chinese planning.
All this adds up to the fact that it would make sense for Russia and America to enter into a strategic alliance based on the perception of shared threats and dangers.
Beyond that, if such a grouping came about the Chinese would doubtless look for foreign friends. Europe, sandwiched between America and Russia might very well prove receptive to Chinese diplomatic overtures - especially in view of the strength of the Chinese economy.
There is much to think about in these things.

I grew up and served in the military during the cold war. Russia has gone from unknown adversary to friend in my life time. Unfortunately, we still have competing political and economic differences that make our politicians treat each other as adversaries. Our politicians find ways of dividing us rather than bringing us together. Fortunately, there is the Internet that allows Russians and Americans to have a dialog in spite of our politicians. So thanks to the Internet I am optimistic.
However, I do miss the USSR being the adversary in Olympic sports. Made it a lot more fun to watch. Now when Russia and the USA compete it is more like the USA against Canada. Lacks the emotion it once had.
So to answer your question I say yes as long as the American and Russian citizen can communicate.

Believe nothing. Russia has nuclear weapons (or so we believe) and an active nuclear program, which could potentially make them a threat to the USA. Also, many Russians still feel resentment against the USA as leftover of the propaganda spread by the USSR prior 1989. There's bound to be problems eventually.

I doubt it. The USA is going to be on its way out of the title of "World Superpower" if we keep up at the rate we're going. One small thing is bound to tick one of the countries off and bam, friendship no more. That's just a pessimisitc view though.
