You deserve respect, but you don't know the secret to get it.
The secret is that you respect all people without expecting it from them.
Why? Because most people think that they can only respect people who deserve respect. So, you respect all to give them the lesson. When they feel that they are not respected like your condition now, they will realize that they are wrong.

Everyone deserves respect until they do something to lose it, then they have to earn it back....the right to be respected that is.

I hope that makes some sense.

Sweet people do not "command" respect. Respect is a looser kind of fear, and people don't fear "sweet" people. Moreover, they'll just steamroller you or walk on you like a rug.

I'm "sweet" in person and have experienced the same issues. I've also experimented with being assertive, and I get more respect that way.

Me too! I try to be nice to everyone. I am the first one to lend a helping hand. I don't judge anyone. Yet, I get treated like dirt by my peers. They don't respect my belongings, my feelings or anything to do with me. I don't get it. I guess that nice gals finish last.

You have to give respect to get respect; maybe they think you're a pushover because you're so nice.
