No, if you want to leave the change from your dollar that's fine, but usually there's no tip for take out.

If you go to a restaurant that you would normally sit down at and eat a nice dinner at to order ToGo food, yes, you should tip. The ToGo people do just as much as your server; they gather your food, fill the drinks, cut bread or whatever they do at that restaurant and not tipping is just rude, especially if you spend over $20 there.

Part of my job at the restaurant I work for is to fill ToGo orders and often times I do MORE for the guest than the servers do. Just because the food gets handed to you in a plastic or paper bag does not mean that work didn't go into getting it to you.

Now, mind you, a large tip is not expected, I would say 10% is generous. If you had several special orders or have just been a general pain in the **** about it all, you should tip more.

I am a server in a restaurant that offers to-go orders. You phone in your order, come in, pay for it, and pick it up. The bartender steps away from making drinks for a few moments to ring in your order after you phone it in. The cooks then prepare it just as if you were eating in the restaurant. The expo (the person who works as quality-control between the kitchen and server) then seals the boxes your food was put in by the cooks, and labels each box. They prepare any sauces you may have requested, and put napkins and utensils in your bag. When you pay the bartender for your order, s/he then informs the expo you are here and they bring the food to you, all packed up ready to go.

In my restaurant, the expo is a minimum-wage earning employee who gets tipped out by the servers, cocktailers, and bartenders. It takes a considerable amount of time to put a to-go order together, especially a large one with lots of requests for sauces and sides. You may not be waited on hand and foot, but a tip-dependant employee still spent a considerable amount of time helping you.

The other thing to consider is that to-go orders are considered a part of the bartender's (or the server who rang the order in) sales. With tip-earning employees in sales positions, the federal government expects us to make 10% of our sales in tips. If we claim less than 10%, whether we make it or not, we are usually "allocated tips" on our W-2's at the end of the year. This means that the government adds income we made to our annual total and owe additional taxes on this "allocated" amount. So, theoretically, if you do not tip, you're making the server/bartender pay for the opportunity to serve you; whether the sale is to-go or in-house.

Bottom line- you should leave a tip on a to-go order, but unless you have a huge to-go order (say 8 or more items), you shouldn't have to be too generous. 10% isn't a very good tip for in-house, but it works great for to-go. However, (for example) if you have a to-go order for 25 items, you have to start taking into consideration how much time tip-earning employees are spending preparing your to-go order instead of helping in-house guests, and you might want to be a little more generous, especially if everything is labelled and ready to go when you get there.

it really depends. If they bring it out to your car, you probably should tip. like at sonic, applebee's car side to go and the like. the coin change or a dollar or two is good. if you just go into the building and pick up your food at the counter, then no tip is needed. if you ask for special things like extra sauces and the like and they give it to you without charging you, then you should tip a little.

It is not customary, but unfortunately people expect tips for everything. The one at the coffee counter always gets me..they are just doing their jobs...

no, that's a bit excessive. The only people that will say yes are probably servers themselves.
