because our minds automatically recognize the words as they would normally appear and we compensate for usually misspelled words. kinda like an internal spellchecker.

Otheres have got close to the answer, it is because we don't spell out every word we see. When you get to stage of reading fluently you are actually recognizing the 'shape' of the word (what it starts with, how long it is, and what it ends with). You also pick up where the letters that 'hang down' (eg g, y, j) are, and where the letters that 'stick up' (eg h,d,b,l,k) are - which is why it is easier to read 'lower case' letters more easily than ALL CAPITALS. Essentially you are recognizing the 'pattern' of words on the page.
The observation about reading upside down is valid, it's just another way of looking at the 'pattern' of the text. It's also possible (quite easy actually..) to write mirror writing style (backwards) and upside down once your head 'clicks into gear'.

Most people don't have a problem with it.
I can read upside down and backwards, and both together.
Word jumbles take about 3 seconds to solve for me.

It's called conditioning. Since you first learned to spell you were conditioned to understand and create words. So if you see something that closely resembles it, triggers in our mind the correct worf.

They said that it's because your brain sees this group of letters not individually, but as a whole.
