I can't really make a decision on my absolute favorite, but here's ONE of them:
Paul Iverson ("Dogs of Babel"). Here's a character who is a college professor, obviously very intelligent and then (I won't give anything away) this horrible thing happens. He goes mad and his entire life is turned around. He almost loses his mind in his "experiment." He redeems himself in the end, though.
