I think that "thick" milk might be colostrum...which is perfectly fine. Your breast milk first starts out to be thick and then thins out. And I think the tanning should be okay...but I would definitely check it out with your doctor.

How do you know it is thick compared to the normal consistency? If you are referring to it being in a bottle, the liquid and fat will separate after sitting for a while but it's fine. It will mix again when heated. When you are nursing the thin part of the milk comes out first to hydrate and quench the baby's thirst and then the thicker milk starts to come out later and that has the fat and vitamins the baby needs for development so it's important to feed the baby the full 20-30 minutes on each side. Tanning shouldn't affect your milk at all, it's what you put in your body that affects your milk.

Your milk is perfectly designed for your baby. So if the milk seems thick, than that's what your baby needs right now. Unless you mean you left the breastmilk sit out and now it's thick- in that case, it's probably spoiled and you shouldn't feed it to the baby. There is a great website with tons of breastfeeding advice that I love...

I wouldn't go tanning, but that's not because of the breastfeeding- it causes cancer. But no, breastfeeding shouldn't prevent you from going tanning if you really must go.

It depends on weather you have pumped, frozen and thawed or straight from momma. If it's pumped make sure it's still fresh! Breast milk lasts up to 3 days in the fridge and up to 6 months frozen. Warm, shake and feed! If it's straight from momma--you're good to go! Breast milk thickens as it sits and the fats seperate. I would watch tanning--you may get burnt on the sensative areas the baby needs to eat from! Also, if you've ever taken a warm shower while breastfeeding you know the water isn't the only thing that showers. Go prepared.

Thick? I think breast milk is naturally thick. First the watery stuff comes out and then the thicker stuff when your milk lets down. I believe tanning is perfectly safe as well. As long as your drinking a lot of water and still taking you vitamins, your milk should have all the right nutrients for your baby.

Don't go tanning! There are dangerous rays in those lights that could hurt your baby through your breast milk. The thick stuff is good for the baby.

Usually breast milk starts out thin, then later on in the feeding gets thicker as the fat starts to come out. That's fine.
Tanning I don't know about. I'd ask a Dr.

Call La Leche League and speak to a lactation nurse.
But as far as I know ...no the "thickness" of your milk shouldn't be a factor. Tanning on the other hand...is stupid no matter what...do you want to look like Magda?
Yay for you for breast feeding ...very smart!
Poo poo on you for tanning...very stupid!
it's great that you're thinking of baby's health and doing the whole breastfeeding thing...however...I bet baby would like to have his mommy around for a long long time...so take care of YOU too...tanning can give you skin cancer...skin cancer can kill you.
Baby says "Mamma...just NO to tanning!"

The thickness of your milk should not effect the nutrional value of it. If you decide to tan make sure any lotions or gels that you use are well washed off with soap and water before nursing or pumping for baby. Best of luck to you and your child.

Check out the site below. Le Leche League International is a great resource for breastfeeding moms. There are articles on almost anything you can think of or have problems with.
Most areas also have a local league and you can connect with other bf mom's in your area which provides a great level of support.
