Some of both. There are those that are just trying to get on T.V. and there are those that have illusions that they can sing. What happens is that there are pre-screenings and they put through the best and the worst. Those that are in the middle - can sing some say your basic Sunday morning choir or praise singer or karaoke enthusiast don't get through at all as the producers prefer the really bad as they believe it to be better entertainment.

American Idol is real. A lot of people who stink go for TV attention or a job for something else or something. Some people are just tone deaf. That means in their head, when they try to sing, it sounds good. But it actually doesn't. So, their voice sounds different to them then it actually does.

I think some of them just want that few minutes of fame, but some of them are deranged and do believe they can sing. Some of them are disabled, like those two guys they had on. I really thought they were making fun of them big time. I felt so bad for them. Simon needs to take it easy on some of those poor people.

In the beginning, it was and now I see it as scripted. Whatever brings in the ratings. Last night, I saw these 2 guys who are on the road from being slammed from the judges not only on their lack of talent but on their looks. People are gaining fame regardless for talent. Take William Hung. I haven't heard from him in awhile and then came across an album released last year. What the heck.

During the auditions they have over 20,000 people at each location try out in front of a big staff of producers. They pick out a few hundred that will be seen by the panel and taped. They are instructed to pick the best ones along with the worst for entertainment value. In a group of 20,000 people there will be hundreds of fools. There is no need to fake it.

I am sure some actually believe it, and have bad friends and family who encourage them.
Others I am sure do it on a dare, lost a bet, or are just trying to have fun with their 15 minutes of fame.
For the truly dillusional ones, I hope they can get some help without the ridicule that public tv offers them. I imagine there are some even more destroyed lives out there because of it.
On the other hand, it can be amusing to watch :)

I think they put some of the worst singers on in the auditions just to entertain people at home. Make the show a little more interesting and bust out funny and get higher ratings.

They really think they can sing. And In my opinion, the problem doesn't lay with these poor souls, but to those friends who say "Oh yeah, Dave, you rock. You need to be on Idol!"

Well William Hung did it, remember?... Most people I've heard singing around me don't even realize they're so bad... I sing and I'm bad, but at least I don't try to torture people with my bad singing...
