American cell phones use a different 'band' to the UK ones...when I took my British cell phone over, I had to get a tri-band phone- but I'm not sure if this is true vice versa. I'd check with your mobile phone carrier.

As long as the model can be bought in the uk,and you are using a mobile company available in the UK there shouldn't be a problem.
Most mobile shops are able to unlock your phone for you if it is needed, for about £10-£15 pounds.

the cell phone is locked so you will have to unlock it first.
