What does "number of allowances" mean on a paystub? What are allowances?

I think this is the number of dependents you are claiming for withholding. If you have a family, you'd include them. If you have very large deductions such as ongoing medical costs or mortgage interest, you may ask for additional allowances to reduce your withholding.
